Guy Opperman, the UK’s longest-serving Pensions Minister, takes role following acquisition and relaunch of ESG Investor as Sustainable Investor by Sustainable Media Group.
Sustainable Media Group today announced the appointment of Guy Opperman, the UK’s longest-serving Pensions Minister, as Head of the Editorial Panel for Sustainable Investor – formerly known as ESG Investor.
The acquisition and relaunch of ESG Investor as Sustainable Investor reflects Sustainable Media Group’s ambition to create the go-to platform for global asset owners, institutional investors, and their advisers seeking trusted intelligence on sustainable finance.
Opperman served as Pensions Minister from 2017 to 2022, overseeing the rollout of Defined Contribution Workplace Pensions in the UK, and leading reforms in Defined Benefit pensions. He was also responsible for passing ESG legislation and introducing the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) protocols in the UK — milestones that shaped the global conversation on responsible investment.
Over his political career, Opperman served under four Prime Ministers and also held roles in the Home Office, Treasury, and Transport departments. Beyond politics, his background spans law, business, sport, and community development:

Since leaving Parliament in 2024, Opperman has made it his mission to change the way retirement savings are delivered globally.
In his new role, Opperman will work closely with Sustainable Investor’s editorial team and wider Editorial Board to ensure coverage addresses the issues most critical to global asset owners and the service providers and investment managers who support them.
